iOS 13.5 Siri will not open apps while driving

After updating to iOS 13.5, Siri will no longer open apps while connected to my car's bluetooth. A car icon appears on the screen, like it's in do not disturb mode, and Siri says that she can't open that app (Waze, Spotifiy) while driving. I've verified that do not disturb while driving is set to manual. Anyone have any suggestions?

Just tested it and the Bluetooth steps are unnecessary. Here are updated instructions. Much easier.

Open the shortcuts app

click on the blue plus sign in the top right corner.

then on the next screen click the three dots symbol in the same spot and name your shortcut whatever phrase you want

next click add action and choose the one marked scripting

In the Apps section and hit open app

the hit the shaded section marked "Choose" and scroll down to the app you want like spotify and select it

then hit done in the top right corner.

Now if you are in the car and you want Spotify just say Hey Siri followed by whatever you named that shortcut. After Spotify is open you should be able to push play on the Bluetooth audio screen of your car and whatever station you were listening to last should play. Then you can say Hey Siri play “This is Chris Cornell in Spotify” for example and it will switch stations.

I would think the same steps could be used to open Waze, but I don't use that one. Seems crazy to go to this extreme and I hope Apple fixes this in the next update.

When you have the choice to manually use do not disturb while driving and that choice is taken away why have the choice. The answer is not to become a programmer and have to finagle short cuts. That is WRONG on Apple's part to even expect. Their little programmers and code writers should have issued a fix for this by now certainly there has been enough complaints by now... ... Even with the short cut.... You still have to unlock your phone (not hands free) or use face ID which means your phone has to be closer to your face than most car mounts allow (not hands free)

Hi. I tried to create a short cut on my iPhone 11 named Waze, or Pandora but those did not work. If I create a short cut for Waze it only brings up Maps. I am very frustrated that with this new operating update, I am not able to open Waze or Pandora or any third-party apps with voice command on Siri. To me, For those of us are so used to using those apps in the car, not having the voice command capability means we are using our fingers to press the phone while driving.

I’ve spent hours on the phone with Apple customer service and it is still not solved. I said I just want it the way it was where I can say, hey, Siri, open Waze or play pandora. I am so tired of her saying: “hmmmm, I can’t help you with that while in the car.” To me, this is not a big but rather, It was Apple’s conscious choice to block the usage of any third party apps anyway they can. Their Maps work in the car but I don’t like it as much as I like Waze. I don’t think it will be a quick fix. I am frustrated that Apple chose to do this.

I'm starting to lose hope too.

It's not even just a whim, it's actually a matter of safety — the whole idea of using Siri while driving is to avoid looking at the phone, and here we are, having to actually fiddle with the phone trying to do basic things such as using a different navigation app than Apple's own.

I contacted Apple on June 26th regarding this issue & another issue I'm having. Supposedly they sent it up to the escalation team. The rep kept in contact with me through July 10th saying they're still working on it, and haven't heard anything back since. So I emailed the rep on July 31st to find out what was going on since it's now over a month that it hasn't been resolved, and haven't heard back from him yet. Now when I try to send a text in the car to a contact with 2 similar names, Siri asks which one I'd like to send it to. But I can't tell her which contact, I have to Look at my phone & not the screen on my car, to choose the person I want. Which defeats the whole purpose of being hands free while driving

Neither would I, I just want to be able to say "Hey Siri, navigate to [place] using Waze" and have it pass on the routing to Waze, instead of telling me "I can't do it while you're driving". Apple Maps is mediocre at best in my area, and Waze's voice recognition isn't that great (plus I could never get it work reliably, though that's obviously not on Apple).

What's frustrating is that it used to work just fine.

I find it funny how it seems to work with Apple Apps but not 3 rd party apps (AGAIN), apple should have been all over this one as it could result in an auto accident with people fumbling with their phone while driving, so much for hands free which was working perfect before the 13.5 update. How could you break such an important feature that is safety related???? Apple, please resolve this.
