iOS 13.5 Siri will not open apps while driving

After updating to iOS 13.5, Siri will no longer open apps while connected to my car's bluetooth. A car icon appears on the screen, like it's in do not disturb mode, and Siri says that she can't open that app (Waze, Spotifiy) while driving. I've verified that do not disturb while driving is set to manual. Anyone have any suggestions?

Just tested it and the Bluetooth steps are unnecessary. Here are updated instructions. Much easier.

Open the shortcuts app

click on the blue plus sign in the top right corner.

then on the next screen click the three dots symbol in the same spot and name your shortcut whatever phrase you want

next click add action and choose the one marked scripting

In the Apps section and hit open app

the hit the shaded section marked "Choose" and scroll down to the app you want like spotify and select it

then hit done in the top right corner.

Now if you are in the car and you want Spotify just say Hey Siri followed by whatever you named that shortcut. After Spotify is open you should be able to push play on the Bluetooth audio screen of your car and whatever station you were listening to last should play. Then you can say Hey Siri play “This is Chris Cornell in Spotify” for example and it will switch stations.

I would think the same steps could be used to open Waze, but I don't use that one. Seems crazy to go to this extreme and I hope Apple fixes this in the next update.

I have been working with Apple since May about this issue. We have done lengthy calls and numerous steps. Engineering did bluetooth and Siri logging on my phone and studied the data. Yes, I have been vocal, frustrated and bewildered. They are too. I love my Apple products and my next step was to get a Samsung. It was decided today to send my phone in to be studied and to see if they can mitigate this issue. Their advice is to keep your phone up to date and when they can solve this issue they will. I feel we are on the radar and a solution is soon to come. Hang in there.

Perfect summary of the situation, thank you.

What baffles me is that, aside from a similar thread here on Apple's own forums, nobody elsewhere seems to have mentioned it. If we really are such a small minority, and virtually everyone else never even tried to use Siri while driving (or is lucky enough to have full CarPlay integration), then that would "explain" why this is not being fixed.

Not all "safety features" prove safe when widely used. Takata air bag explosions and recalls, for example.

When product designs proves dangerous when reported by the public:

a) It doesn't need to happen to ALL drivers prior to demand for resolution.

b) Downstream manufacturers relying on that dangerous product should not be expected to modify their products to protect you from a faulty air bag, for example. The onus or responsibility would/should be on the manufacturer that endangers people across the broad spectrum of manufacturers relying on that component. This should be true whether it is an air bag or an operating system revision that - without warning or acknowledgement to app vendors or the public - impacts apps and drivers in a way that causes (FAR MORE) than the people posting here to report dangerous distraction that would imperil drivers and others on the road.

I could go on and enumerate, but suffice that we have demonstrated here, on at least 16 pages posted, that it happened after 13.5. That it occurs across a broad spectrum of vehicles. And that we have found the distraction created by this sudden and unexplained/unaddressed flaw to be counter to safety, at minimum.

Apple, I believe the record shows Takata was faulted for knowing of the problem and not responding. Please step up on this. Thanks.

I don't see what people who aren't experiencing a problem are doing in this forum, other than Apple, of course.

The problem has been explained numerous times here. Saying you don't see a problem if you aren't experiencing it does little for those who do have the problem.

To reiterate: "Siri, open X application" for navigation, dictation, ordering food, and many other tasks once possible, now produces a black screen with a white car and statement: "Sorry i can't handle that request while you are in the car."

If you are navigating using with Google Maps or Waze or dictating with apps like Dragon, or launching Spotify and things like that, you should NOT have to pull over, turn your car OFF, open the app, etc. Further, an argument should not be made that programs like WAZE are unsafe to use when it is products like that, that warn drivers of road obstructions, alternate routes due to backup, and so forth.

Simply, to use the applications I have described, one MUST INTERACT WITH THE PHONE BY HAND (caps only for emphasis), thereby creating an UNSAFE situation, not a safer one.

Just adding to this thread since I'm also experiencing this and can't find any answers. This is literally the only thread that mentions the picture of the car popping up.

I use an iphone XR running ios 13.7. (literally just updated)

My car is a 2015 Ford Fiesta. Uses Ford Sync for bluetooth connections.

Do not disturb is set to manually.

Photo below is the screen I'm getting whenever I say "Hey siri".

Doesn't matter what I ask it to do it doesn't say anything verbally and the screen doesn't change. Holding the side button to activate siri doesn't work either. Just shows the same screen. It works as soon as I disconnect from the vehicles bluetooth.
