iOS 13.5 Siri will not open apps while driving

After updating to iOS 13.5, Siri will no longer open apps while connected to my car's bluetooth. A car icon appears on the screen, like it's in do not disturb mode, and Siri says that she can't open that app (Waze, Spotifiy) while driving. I've verified that do not disturb while driving is set to manual. Anyone have any suggestions?

Just tested it and the Bluetooth steps are unnecessary. Here are updated instructions. Much easier.

Open the shortcuts app

click on the blue plus sign in the top right corner.

then on the next screen click the three dots symbol in the same spot and name your shortcut whatever phrase you want

next click add action and choose the one marked scripting

In the Apps section and hit open app

the hit the shaded section marked "Choose" and scroll down to the app you want like spotify and select it

then hit done in the top right corner.

Now if you are in the car and you want Spotify just say Hey Siri followed by whatever you named that shortcut. After Spotify is open you should be able to push play on the Bluetooth audio screen of your car and whatever station you were listening to last should play. Then you can say Hey Siri play “This is Chris Cornell in Spotify” for example and it will switch stations.

I would think the same steps could be used to open Waze, but I don't use that one. Seems crazy to go to this extreme and I hope Apple fixes this in the next update.

"I've searched about this issue - there are not many of these type complaints. "

I disagree. Here in this forum alone, you have 500 "Me too" postings declaring they are experiencing the problem. I'd venture AT LEAST four times that have experienced this well enough as we have, to have concerns, but only 500 have bothered to hit the "me too button. If true, 2,000 customers complain about a dangerous scenario, to no remedy from Apple. Go check the Takata-related deaths by comparison and that will help you to understand the numbers required.

Listen, put two children in the car with the mother who had this problem. And then place the car among 6 others involved in the fiery crash.

Wake up, Apple. Fix it.

This is not solved. The latest version does not fix that Hey, Siri, directions to home using Waze. If Sori says “hmm, I can’t help you with hat while you’re in the car one more time, I think I will throw my phone out the window.” Why is it only Apple Apps work like Maps and none of the third parties like Pandora, iHeatradio, and Waze?” Fix it. It worked before. You’re just forcing us to use our fingers while driving for the functions we need.

Full factory reset and system restore of latest iOS 14 via my Mac on an iPhone 11 and STILL NO FIX !

Still the same GIGANTIC CAR ICON when calling up Siri & 3rd party Apps when connected via Bluetooth Audio to my basic Pioneer car stereo.

Do Not Disturb While Driving is set to ‘Manually’ by default.

It’s official. This EXCRUCIATING, ANNOYING and DOWNRIGHT DANGEROUS Siri BUG is here to stay and will never be fixed.

So many lost hours trying to troubleshoot this bug, so many lost thoughts when driving because my ‘hands-free’ companion is locked-up OFFLINE and refuses to let me do the things I want or access the information I need when driving.

I seriously want a refund on this expensive and useless phone !!

Seriously Apple. What is the point of this ?

I have used iPhone for years as I prefer a simplistic, well supported mobile phone. I'm begining to suspect that this is more of a Big Brother thing that a software bug. If this issue is not resolved by the time I need a new phone ( few years) I'll be switching to Android. I would rather accept the challenge of new (to me) technology than lose my rights to Apple.

Well, how obtuse of all of us here, then, right?

As your veiled insult would have us bow to your erudite observation:

1) What are you doing in this forum if not wasting your precious time?

2) In your wisdom your flawed logic fails to realize that most of us here have already contacted Apple support to no remedy/avail.

3) "Complaining in a user forum" is PRECISELY what you just did, but to the forum experiencing the problem and trying to guide each other in the absence of vendor resolution.

4) To everyone here, perhaps there is a fix in the 14.0 update. I am installing it as I respond to his/her excellency.

Jester,

"Simply complaining about it in a user forum" is not at all what we have done, as mentioned repeatedly in these discussions, if you could read and comprehend the many comprehensive descriptions. That is your incorrect conclusion.

Many of us see this as a severe safety issue and have not taken the matter lightly.

Many of us pay for AppleCare and have reached to them as a FIRST measure to resolve, rather than rely on the community for lengthy discussions such as this.

What brings you here, by the way, if you were not having the problem? And if it was resolved by your reach to Apple, by all means, share your wealth of information.

@wrke: "They do monitor it." Of course they do. They say as much the disclaimer at the base of this forum: "Apple may provide or recommend responses as a possible solution based on the information provided."

The OP was pontificating with assumptions that we hadn't contacted the manufacturer prior to posting here, and that the company doesn't monitor its user forums. He was chiding us while donating his time to help these misguided lambs.

iOS 14 made this even worse... If my phone is locked while I'm driving and connected to bluetooth, the infamous car screen pops up when trying to ask Siri something. When the phone is unlocked the screen doesn't show the car but instead shows the floating Siri "orb" at the bottom and it just floats around and spins without doing anything at all. Siri is absolutely useless while connected to bluetooth in a vehicle and I have to manually do everything on my phone. How is the quality control for this software so poor? I'm no developer, just a consumer, but I've never had consistent issues like this with ANY other software in my lifetime.

Should we start a new thread that isn't marked as "answered".

'Should we start a new thread that isn't marked as "answered"'

I wish the OP could change that from Solved and keep the majority posting to this thread because I believe it's great to cite over 20 pages and over 500 "me-too"s, full of people who describe in detail and indicate contacting Apple, but without repair. I also wish the thread's title could indicate 14.0 does nothing to resolve it, but makes it worse, as it has for you @inkkling.

This caused me to purchase an Android for travel. A very expensive one at that - the MS Surface Duo. It does what I need when driving, but shame on you, Apple. Really. To potentially lose customers over this is ridiculous.

Wow, If you read the forum you would know that most of us a GOOD MAJORITY of us have contacted APPLE went up the chain to engineers and escalation services. We have encouraged each other to contact them and keep working their solution. They took my phone back to study and gave me a new one. Once I updated same problem. SO I have had a case number since 13.5 update came out June 20, 2020 and I continue to work within that case number to keep record of everything we have tried. There are thousands with this problem nationwide and only a handful of them come here. Some feel they are just subject to the whims of Apple.
