iOS 13.5 Siri will not open apps while driving

After updating to iOS 13.5, Siri will no longer open apps while connected to my car's bluetooth. A car icon appears on the screen, like it's in do not disturb mode, and Siri says that she can't open that app (Waze, Spotifiy) while driving. I've verified that do not disturb while driving is set to manual. Anyone have any suggestions?

Just tested it and the Bluetooth steps are unnecessary. Here are updated instructions. Much easier.

Open the shortcuts app

click on the blue plus sign in the top right corner.

then on the next screen click the three dots symbol in the same spot and name your shortcut whatever phrase you want

next click add action and choose the one marked scripting

In the Apps section and hit open app

the hit the shaded section marked "Choose" and scroll down to the app you want like spotify and select it

then hit done in the top right corner.

Now if you are in the car and you want Spotify just say Hey Siri followed by whatever you named that shortcut. After Spotify is open you should be able to push play on the Bluetooth audio screen of your car and whatever station you were listening to last should play. Then you can say Hey Siri play “This is Chris Cornell in Spotify” for example and it will switch stations.

I would think the same steps could be used to open Waze, but I don't use that one. Seems crazy to go to this extreme and I hope Apple fixes this in the next update.

Here we are iOS 14 not fixed..... even worse. Apple has taken my phone all the way up the chain to escalation, engineering, used Siri and Bluetooth logging to watch what happens when I ask Siri to do something. I have been dealing with this since June 2020. Apple now has my phone to study but ..... essentially my phone is a brick in my car. USELESS. Fortunately my daughters Samsung doesn't have this issue. Next upgrade guess what I am going to do.

The CarThrottle article was informative, so thanks JoyKeepin.

Ehem ... however: Apple is missing the point, in a very big and costly way. Costly in terms of lives and in terms of customer shift elsewhere.

Here: Firearm use, like driving, is inherently dangerous. Take 3,000 lbs. of metal and fuel-fired explosions and propel it at 65 MPH down the road, roughly 7 feet away from either side of another 3,000 lbs. of metal traveling in the opposite direction. Now multiply that across the country. Now multiply that by the number of lanes on a given roadway.

How do we survive?

It is because we received the proper training. And even with that, there are deaths.

So, too, with firearms use and training. I needn't expand on that, other than to say that before you can hunt or receive various permits, you must undergo training.

These are potentially deadly endeavors, after all.

Apple, if you want to cover your ***, which clearly this maneuver is - rather than benevolent to mankind - but for the sake of your users and everyone, really: FOR GOD'S SAKE - TRAIN YOUR CUSTOMERS ON THE USE OF HANDS FREE COMMUNICATION. IMPROVE YOUR FUNCTIONALITY SO THAT IT IS ACTUALLY ENTIRELY POSSIBLE. ONLY THEN, AFTER PASSING THE REQUISITE TRAINING CAN YOU ENABLE VARIOUS RATED APPS MOST OFTEN USED ON THE ROAD.

In other words, "THINK DIFFERENT!?"

@inkkling: I agree! I'm an Apple Watch user, an iPhone user, and so is my wife on both of those. I am/was reluctant to change to a different brand. I just have both now, which was costly and almost absurd in terms of necessity, but to keep everyone safe while driving, that's what I needed to do.

HOWEVER: I liken this to Takata airbags being in a variety of vehicles. Where Apple is concerned, they are the ones to best determine the behavior of our phones across the spectrum of manufacturers, not us. They should field test the OS prior to releasing that blasted block screen when Siri is invoked because we are TRYING to be safe and hands free.

I may be in a rental car or a different car, and Siri may or may not work there, or with whatever vehicle I buy tomorrow, all of a sudden my iPhone may tell me: "Hmm ... I can't do that while you are in the car." As it does.

To me it must be fixed in the OS, because tomorrow someone needing to interact with their phone due to this "feature" may kill one of MY family members, or yours. God forbid.

In my humble opinion, the goal MUST be hands-free communication, and that should come from the phone vendor.

Agree 100%. I mean, it stands to reason that when a car is sold, someone else will be driving it, and they may be using an iPhone, and I share the road with them. Apple needs to fix this.

@Jollino, I certainly have reported it a number of times, via AppleCare; however, I didn't report it to the beta software feedback assistant you provided. I don't develop Apple-related software and would need to sign up with them.

Couldn't have said it better myself, @lapep.

Also, not sure if this was posted already, but here's a related thread posted back in May on the Macrumors forums. No solutions mentioned but it's obvious that something needs to be done about it. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ios-13-5-siri-will-not-open-apps-while-driving.2238862/

Wish there was some way to actually get it on Apple's radar enough to take action. I've personally sent in feedback but can't seem to find my ticket # now. How convenient.

First i have been reporting this for months and apple has never responded at all.

one other thing that happened with 13.5 for me (besides the stupid thing that i can turn it off for passengers, like when my grandkids are with me) is that bluetooth will not stay connected, like for a phone call, 3 minutes and it disconnects completely,

apple you suck!

exact same reason i got rid of my 3c and went msdos, a long long time ago

@joykeepin: Well, what else can you do, you know? It's the responsible thing:

That article forever changed me where hands-free communication is concerned.

It SHOULD be pursued by Apple to be completely hands free, and to educate and provide its customers accordingly. Give us the tools, for heaven's sake!

It is such a low priority with them, that we are where we are. I commend you, Joy. I refuse to be belittled or relegated to not important enough.

So, Apple has turned big brother. They have deliberately removed @hilari160's post here to thwart her democratic efforts to launch a (and you can't say the word that rhymes with slurvey or tetition). She said she would take her findings to the media.

They removed my post that indicated I would participate, and they sent an email that said we couldn't do that here.

They subsequently removed hilari160's and rob's.

Therefore, they are monitoring this thread and are aware.

They intend to squelch our concerns and interests.

Hey, what happened to "Think Different"?

More like "Think Tyranny." Way to go, Apple. This is definitely not one of your finest moments ....

By the way, go ahead and delete this -- we're saving all of it to present to the media regardless. You're just making the situation more embarrassing for the company.

PS: The only change I made based on a recommendation of an Apple ex-colleague was to disable and enable "Hey Siri" but highly doubt that did anything.

Several folks on this forum complained about Spotify not working as expected. I do not subscribe or use Spotify but would think it'd be treated as another app like Waze.

Hope someone else can also experience the same behavior change ...

Oct 30, 2020 5:21 AM in response to crix17

There is no way to remove the “solved” status from a post in this forum. I marked the work around as a solution because it actually did solve the specific need that I was looking for...open Waze and Spotify. I understand that the underlying issue still needs to be addressed, but for this specific problem creating the shortcut helped, and thus answered my question.

To others who are following this thread (perhaps by email alert from Apple) and are still hopeful that a fix or work-around can be found for the 'Siri - Do not disturb while driving' restrictions (in all iOS updates post iOS 13.5) - I have started a new thread today (Dec 2020) of the same topic 'crix17' posted back in May - I encourage you to post your updated iOS 'Siri/Bluetooth - Do not disturb while driving' experiences in the new post.

I will not be marking the thread 'Solved' until a fix or acceptable work-around has been found - and will keep the thread open.

If you have found a suitable work-around that works for you - post your suggestions in the new thread here:
