iPhone automatically sets to 'Do not disturb' when connected to my car's bluetooth.

Since iOS 13.5 (May 2020), Siri will no longer open 3rd party apps while connected to my car's bluetooth. A car icon appears on the screen when my iPhone 11 pairs with my vehicle bluetooth and I invoke Siri to perform a task, like it's in 'Do not disturb while driving" mode - Siri says "I can't do that while you're in the car". I've verified that 'Do not disturb while driving' is set to 'Manually'. Anyone have any suggestions? I cannot turn this feature off. Previous to this update, I could ask Siri to perform almost any task without issue. Now. all updates post May of this year limit Siri to only a few basic Apple apps like 'Maps' etc when driving.

Please note: This post is a continuation of this thread posted shortly after iOS 13.5 was released back in May. Unfortunately it has been marked as 'Solved' - but the issue is not solved.

If you've previously posted in that thread and want to continue following this issue - please add your input to this new post and subscribe to this thread - added Dec 2020.

The purpose of this post is to have the 'Set to Manually' bug in the 'Do not disturb while driving' settings restored to its previous iOS 13.5 functionality - i.e. for that setting to turn off all/any Siri restrictions when connected to our vehicle's bluetooth car stereos.

A couple of thoughts - as Macfinger stated - this issue has been with us since 13.5. Apple Support is well aware of it - a number of us have spent time - a lot of time - on this issue - providing multiple videos, providing diagnostics, various profiles, etc. to their second level advisers.

Apple has simply not fixed the bug they introduced. In the original thread someone came up with a workaround using shortcuts. That may have worked for him - it does not help us.

In my case, my 2010 Toyota - I have no issue - it works as intended. In my 2018 Toyota it does not work. The RAV4 has all current firmware updates. Prior to 13.5 it worked fine in the 2018 Toyota. The only diff. is the 2018 has Apple's so-called "Siri Eyes Free" - which isn't much of anything. Don't confuse that with Car Play. And Apple Support is aware of this too.

I mount my phone on the dash - and give Siri commands to open apps - etc. -- all hand-free - now I can not. This is a very dangerous bug -- someone will have an accident.

To Apple Forum advisers - thanks for your advisories - they do not work - they do not have anything to do with this issue. Please take the time to read the prior thread on this issue and fully understand it - all of those suggestions and 'stock' links have been tried and found not to work.

Once the DND comes on while you are in the car - there is NO way to disable DND. Apple has to fix it.

Hoping it might be in 14.3 (comes out this week?). If it's not, I'm taking a new 'path' to get it fixed.

Ok... I was able to test it in my car and the combination of doing what I suggested above. This....

Then go into settings> Control Center and add the Do Not Disturb While Driving widget to Control Center....

When you’re in your car and connected to it via Bluetooth open control center and press the car logo... It worked for me. Trust, I’ve wasted a bunch of time and energy yelling at Siri in my car and this worked for me. They need to make it easier, someone’s going to get into an accident trying to get Siri to give them directions.

Turn on Do Not Disturb While Driving

If iPhone detects you might be driving and you haven’t set up Do Not Disturb While Driving, you’re asked if you want to turn it on. Otherwise, you can turn it on manually.

  1. Go to Settings  > Do Not Disturb.
  2. Scroll down, then tap Activate.
  3. Choose when you want Do Not Disturb While Driving to turn on.
    • Automatically: When iPhone detects you might be driving.
    • When Connected to Car Bluetooth: When your iPhone is connected to a car’s Bluetooth system.
    • Manually: When you turn it on in Control Center.
    • Activate With CarPlay: Automatically when iPhone is connected to CarPlay.
  • To add Do Not Disturb While Driving to Control Center, go to Settings > Control Center, then tap  next to Do Not Disturb While Driving.

It seems this car icon discussed here and in that earlier post do not appear on all vehicles. I had an iPhone 11 Pro and now have the iPhone 12 Pro and have not witnessed this behavior in my vehicle, a 2015 Mercedes C Class. I was involved in a thread earlier in the year with people reporting that they were being told of a text message being sent out to people trying to text them about the driver could not receive messages. They also said they did not have Do Not Disturb turned on either. Turns out, this was something added to their vehicles. They had different models of Nissan cars and SUV that had this as a part of the car's system. When the iPhone was connected to the vehicle's Bluetooth, it had a setting to send out this message. They swore it was the iPhone, but the message sent did not match the stock message in the iPhone. Turns out that is how they were able to discover it was the car that was sending out the message because of the DND setting in the car, not the Phone. With the vehicle not with DND while driving on, it makes one wonder if there is something about the vehicles here as well.

The fault is not with any apps - the bug is with my iPhone 11 running iOS 14.x which is automatically connecting to 'Do Not Disturb while Driving' mode when it connects via Bluetooth. The manual setting to turn off Do Not Disturb does nothing - the phone is perpetually stuck in Do Not Disturb mode when connected to my car stereo.

Simple requests to check the weather - shuffle a particular playlist in Music - asking Siri a question - all returns 'I cannot do that while you are in the car'. If I want to open any 3rd party apps - I have to do it manually using my hands. All these Siri functions worked 'handsfree' before the iOS 13.5 update in May.

No, it doesn't. I have a 2015 Mercedes and a 2017 Hyundai. The Hyundai has CarPlay, but I haven't used it since I purchased my iPhone 12. DND while driving would not activate on my iPhone in the past. I can try going out in a little while and see if there is any change with DND since the car is here today that I can use. I'll write back after that.

When this first started happening while I was driving, Siri saying she wouldn’t open Maps to give me directions “while screen was disabled”..... I was like WTF!!?.... I got into a shouting match with her on the road and she actually snapped out of it and gave me the information I needed.... Try yelling? :)

The 2 steps I listed in my last post worked for me in my pre CarPlay Lexus.
