Adding Credit Card to iPhone Wallet....

... but the iPhone is only on a data SIM, so there is no phone function. This means that when Wallet tries to verify a new credit card, it can’t call the bank.

How do I verify the credit card without the phone calling the bank? Can I put the phone SIM from my wife’s iPhone into my iPhone long enough to let it verify my credit card?

iPhone SE, iOS 13

For future reference, using a phone-capable SIM from a different phone does the trick. Or, it at least did so for me.

  1. Sometimes if you sign out of your Apple ID and back in it resolves the problem.
  2. Check your Apple ID region to make sure it is correct. If it is correct, you may need to select the same region again. (Change your Apple ID country or region - Apple Support)
  3. Check the region on your device to ensure it is correct (Settings>general>language & region - set to your region)
  4. A passcode is required to use the Wallet app.
  5. You need to be in a region that supports Apple Pay - Countries and regions that support Apple Pay - Apple Support
  6. Your bank needs to support Apple Pay - Apple Pay participating banks - Apple Support
  7. If none of these suggestions are able to resolve your issue you can go here for further assistance - If you can't add cards to Wallet for Apple Pay - Apple Support

Yes, I read that. And it is not helpful at all. Japan supports Apple Pay bc my wife uses it. The SE is an eligible device in and of itself. It just DOESN’T HAVE A SIM CARD THAT ALLOWS IT TO MAKE A PHONE CALL. The iOS is updated. The card is more or less not the problem at this point because the phone can’t CALL the bank to verify it. It’s trying, but the call itself fails. And I am signed into my Apple ID on the phone.

You do understand that the phone can’t call the banks, right? It completely lacks the ability to make ANY phone calls. It has a data SIM, which allows internet access, but it cannot call a phone number.

Snarky? I simply told you that your assistance did not address my problem. And you snarkily replied that I should read step 7 again, which I step-wise explained did not work. The problem, as I explained, was that the phone could not use the phone function to verify the cards because I was using a data SIM. I wanted to know if there was another way to verify the cards.

Your response was what is known as a Microsoft Answer...information that is totally and absolutely correct but does nothing to answer the question at hand. I thanked you for your time, and that was sincere. And my snarkiness was actually being blunt and stating that your suggestions had already been considered and did not work or did not appky.

Thanks for taking the time to help, but these solutions don’t address the nature of my problem at all. I can open Wallet and add cards. But then it wants to verify the card. This involves allowing the Wallet app to CALL THE BANK. Except I am using this iPhone with a data SIM. There is no phone function so when Wallet tries to call the call fails and the card fails to verify.

My wife has an iPhone and I could temporarily insert her SIM into my phone. But I’m not sure the verification process will work properly with a SIM that has a different phone number. See, the data SIMs assign a phone number. My iPad has an associated phone number. But it is useless when it comes to making a call.
