Custom Ringtone

I have a ringtone I got for a contribution to NPR. It is a MP3 file. I’m told I have to convert it to an ACC file. I haven’t been able to do it on my MAC (Music version 1.0.4.104/Catalina. 10.15.4) I put the mp3 in my music library. I’ve set the import settings under preferences to AAC Incoder. I highlight the mp3 and click on convert under the file tab and none of the options under that are active. What now?

Greetings, greysheep.

I see that you're trying to use an MP3 file as a ringtone. You've heard that you need to convert the song to an ACC file, and I'm glad to help with this.

Create a ringtone of your Logic Pro X or GarageBand for Mac song -- These are the steps to create a ringtone and sharing your project so that your iOS device can access it. A ringtone can't be any longer than 40 seconds, a text tone only 30 seconds. And, the file extension should be *.m4r so that it's recognized as a ringtone.

Take care.

See Create and manage ringtones in iTunes - Apple Community. Note there is a potential gotcha on a Mac where you've converted a file to .m4a and then changed the file extension to .m4r without removing the item from the library. In some cases it may also be necessary to wipe and reload custom ringtones when Finder is unable to transfer them using the drag & drop or copy & paste methods that are supposed to be supported.

Hey, greysheep. It looks like you're all set. You can transfer the custom ringtone by syncing it with iTunes on your Mac.

Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod using your computer -- Depending on whether your Mac on macOS or an macOS Mojave or earlier, sync your iPhone with Finder or iTunes.

Use tones and ringtones with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch -- Once it's on your iPhone, set the ringtone as your regular ringtone, or assign it to a contact.

Have a great day!

Thank you for getting back to us with your question, greysheep. It's appreciated.

Convert a song to a different file format with the Apple Music app or iTunes for Windows -- Since the file extension needs to be *.m4r, an *.mp3 file won't be recognized as a ringtone. You can convert it using the Music app on your Mac.

Import music from a computer to Music on Mac -- This explains how to import the *.mp3 into Music on your Mac in order to convert it to a different file type.

Cheers!
