Is it still possible to update an A1432 to IOS 9.3.5 ? When I check for an update in Settings, I get an error with no explanation. Are updates to this unit no longer supported? I thought there might still be a useful app or two that work with 9.3.5 that don't run on 7.1.2 (current version).

Well, iPad A1432 model should support iOS 9.3.5.

That is an iPad Mini first generation and iOS 9.3.5 is the highest level you can run on that device. If you can't perform the update over the air, connect your iPad to your home computer running iTunes and do the update. You're going to find there are many many apps which will not be compatible with such an old iPad.
As your iPad is significantly behind the final supported version for your device, the OTA update is unlikely to work from Settings > General > Software Update.
As such, you’ll need to attempt update using iTunes - from a PC, or a Mac.
