iPhone stuck in AirPod mode

My phone is stuck in AirPod mode. I can make and receive calls when using AirPods but unable to disconnect or choose an alternative option...the speaker option is greyed out. I have tried all the obvious things and even done a full factory restore which fixed the problem initially but once I used The AirPods again the problem has returned and restored it again has not worked. Thanks in advance for any help
