Is this only an issue when using Zoom or does it also happen with other Apps like Music or when watching YouTube videos? If it only happens on Zoom then you may need to change the Audio output in Zoom to the headphones.

when I am on a zoom call and I plug into the audio port, it does not connect - I can still hear it on the computer but not in my ear buds; do I have to do something in system preferences for it to choose?

The port on the right is the audio out port of your MacBook
