OSStatus Error 1, Failure to restore.

Hi. I'm trying to make a usb installer for one of my old macbook pro's to run mountain lion but I can't seem to make a bootable usb. I get to disk utillity and try to restore the install ESD to the usb drive but then I would always get this error,

Validating target...

Validating source...

Validating sizes...

Could not validate sizes - Operation not permitted

The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error 1.)

Could someone explain to me how to fix it?

It would help to know exactly what steps you are following. The normal procedure, as I remember, is to drag the Install ESD disk image to your Desktop. Double-click on it to mount the disk image. Now, use Disk Utility to clone the mounted disk image (not the .dmg file) to the formatted USB disk. This disk should be formatted using HFS+.
