How do I start dictation using my magic keyboard? I don’t have a voice button like I do on my screen. In fact, when the keyboards attached, I can touch anything to start using my voice.

With the on screen keyboard I see a microphone button i can press to start dictation into a text area. How do I do this with the magic keyboard? When I got it, I thought it would have a microphone button on it as well.

Yes. The option keys work to produce special characters just like they do on MacOS.

The control and command keys are used for menu shortcuts similar to MacOS.

To tell Apple how annoyed you are and ask them to add a mike button to the magic keyboard, you can use

I followed your directions. When I do this, I see the keyboard appear. So anytime I want to dictate I have to hold these keys down and touch the screen twice. Did the Designers at Apple just not really try it out (or maybe all their testers looove typing) that people still might want to dictate while the keyboard is attached?

I would have been truly magical to have a Siri key on the keyboard that, when pressed and held down would engage Siri to listen until I stopped pressing down. As long as I’m pressing, I know she’s listening. No need for her to say anything unless it is the answer or clarification. Being able to do this would be so fast and easy.

Did you really have to unattach your magic keyboard in order to use the screen keyboard and start dictating??

The first time my software keyboard appeared, there was no dictation button on it. The second time it appeared their was. Perhaps there is some latency for the microphone button to appear sometimes? I use hearing aids and notice that sometimes slows down the activation I of some Siri related features. Maybe that happened here.

I’m still annoyed that I have to touch the keyboard, then the screen twice to get dictation and then once more to hide the keyboard. My magic keyboard has a key to change the keyboard language which I might use 2-3 times per week, yet does not have a microphone key which I use multiple times a day. I’m curious about the control and option keys. Do these even have functionality in iPad OS. Seems so odd to me and unlike Apple to not think things through more in this way.
