It has gotten to the point where I reflexively cringe every time I get an iTunes update notification. My initial reaction for the past few years has been, "Okay, what did they break or what useful feature have they removed *this* time that's going to make me regret updating yet again?"
Anyway, I get the same message. Even if Home Sharing is on and properly signed in, it appears to try to transfer files, then chokes and says my machine is not a member of the home share. And that's bull: my machine is the OG of this home share. It was the first one in the house to even have iTunes on it. The home share was first set up on this machine. Not to mention (and what is so wildly frustrating with some of iTunes's antics) it was *just* working fine last week! Now, it just gives up, turns Home Sharing off on my machine, then complains it's not part of the home share.
I'll reach out to support and let them know. Once again, I find myself waiting around for the good folks at Apple to fix a problem that didn't even exist until a few days ago.
This appears to be a recently developed issue with Home Sharing. Contact Apple Support to let them know you are affected too.

Thanks for the reply and you have expressed my sentiments exactly. Had been sitting on a update for one of my computers for several months for exactly the reason you described plus the fact that Apple seems to have lost interest in iTunes. When nothing else seemed to help this latest problem I decided to go ahead and install it.....what did I have to lose? Of course it did not solve the problem but, so far, it does not seem to have messed anything else up.
