iPhoto Permissions

We're trying to import photos in iPhoto on an external drive into Photos on a MacBook Air. We're then directed to use the iPhoto Library Upgrader tool, which tells us that there is a problem accessing one or more files in the photo library and would we like iPhoto to repair permissions. If we click on repair, iPhoto crashes and that's where we're stuck. I couldn't figure out a way to save or attach the analytics report for the crash. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

We'd like to import (or otherwise access) these old photos from when iPhoto was used. As I explained in my first post, we're directed to use iPhoto Library Upgrader tool, which tells us that there is a problem accessing one or more files in the photo library and would we like iPhoto to repair permissions.

When you try to open an iPhoto Library from many years ago and are told to run the iPhoto Library upgrader tool, your iPhoto library is in a very old format - it must have been created by iPhoto 7.1.2 or older.

To be able to run the iPhoto Library Upgrader tool without permissions problems it may help to move this library to an external volume, that has not been used for Time Machine backups and where you can set the Ignore Ownership flag: Prepare an external volume as described here: Move your Photos library to save space on your Mac - Apple Support

Then copy the old iPhoto Library to this volume and try again to open it in iPhoto Library Upgrader.

Once the library has been prepared, you should be able to open it in iPhoto 9.6.1 to repair it, or open it in Photos to convert it to a Photos Library. In your original post you wrote that you are trying to import photos - you cannot import the old iPhoto library into another library, you can just open the library in Photos or in iPhot and try to export the photos from it, so you can import the photos into your current Photos Library.

You can restore the older iPhoto library from your Time Machine backup by launching TM, selecting that drive as the drive to search, located the library and restore to your boot drive. Then open it with Photos to convert it to a Photos library.

When that's done you can merge the new Photos library into your current library with the paid version of PowerPhotos.

iCloud is not an off computer storage facility. It's a syncing tool to keep Photos' libraries on multiple devices in sync and the same. Delete/add a photo on one device and it's deleted/added on all devices.

Hi again - I thought maybe I'm not providing enough information, so please bear with me as I try again. We have photos (maybe a few hundred) from 8 - 10 years ago that exist only on an external drive and were saved when iPhoto was the pictures app in the Mac OS. I don't remember what program was used to make the backup - probably Time Machine. We're now using Mojave 10.14.6 and the Photos app on a MacBook Air. We'd like to import (or otherwise access) these old photos from when iPhoto was used. As I explained in my first post, we're directed to use iPhoto Library Upgrader tool, which tells us that there is a problem accessing one or more files in the photo library and would we like iPhoto to repair permissions. If we click on repair, iPhoto just crashes. You then recommended "Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild." and asked if we have a backup (and we don't). I assume the reason we should make sure we have a backup is that rebuilding the library carries the risk of a crash that would lose all of the photos? What are the options for backing up the photos from the external drive to another location? Is iCloud a good option? Are there instructions for doing this on iCloud.com?

Thanks!
