El Capitan won't install
When I try to install MacOS El Capitan on my Imac, I select Macintosh HD as the drive, and it tells me "this disk is used for Time Machine Backups". But it's not. The install won't proceed. What's wrong?

To confirm, you tried erasing the target—showing all devices, if necessary—and El Capitan will not install? With GUID/GPT partitioning and HFS+ selected?
Which iMac year? If it’s new enough, El Capitan won’t install.
Thanks for the suggestion. Tried it, but it didn't solve the problem.
