Overheating issues on iOS 13.5

I have been experiencing overheating on my iPhone 11 Pro Max after the iOS 13.5 update even with minimal usage (eg. Safari web browsing). Anyone else having this issue as well?

This has been a nightmare for me. All of my stores here are closed due to pandemic and riots, etc, so I couldn't get any help. Here's what I did to fix this:

After completely wiping my phone (after backing it up), I set it up as a new device first (don't connect with iCloud). It was still running hot, and it would not charge. After messing with it for a while, I just let it sit overnight (not charging) and let it completely drain the battery. The next morning, I plugged the phone back in, it charged, did not overheat.

After I was happy with it not getting hot, I decided to wipe the phone again (keep in mind, I still had not logged back into iCloud), and then set it up, again, but this time restoring from my latest backup. Everything loaded within a few hours, and I've still not had any issues with it since. We're now on day two, and it's running fine - better, actually, than before. It's much faster.

I too have an XS and I suddenly found it getting quite uncomfortably hot. This was after installing 13.5.

Here’s what I did. Blaming 13.5 I thought going back to 13.4.1 might help but that didn’t work. So I tried re-setting the device and installed 13.5.1. - I felt a fresh install might help after messing around with reversing back.

It was then I discovered something. Whilst browsing in Safari I felt that familiar heat build up once again so I disabled dark mode. It would appear dark mode draws from the processor thus making the battery temperature rise.

Give it a go, it might help.

Guys,

would you please check your battery regularly. I caught this behaviour multiple times already and I have screenshotted them. It seems there is some kind of memory leak or bug that allows apps to work in backgroubd like crazy ! Some apps worked for straight 15 hours in my case while I was sleeping and iphone should be idle. Check attached pics

please let me know if you hav same symptoms

I’ve been having this issue with my iPhone 11 Pro since upgrading to 13.5. I always swipe up and close down all apps after using them, so no apps were actively opened. Seems like this is either a system process, memory leak, or an app with background services and a runaway thread.

That said, tonight I completely powered down my iPhone (hold Power and Volume Up until Power Off slider displays, then swipe to power off). After powering the phone back on it’s been running cool for a good 30 minutes. I’ve been in Safari and opened a few apps and haven’t had any issues so far. YMMV.

Hello ChesterW1,

Currently, I am using iOS 13.4.1 with my iPhone X.

After updated to 13.4.1, I have had the same issues overheating (near the earpiece, around the lens module, battery charger), and battery drain(normal usage and overnight). I did including followings (with advice from experienced users found in this Community)

  • Disable APPs from running in the background.
  • Disable all Siri related functionalities.
  • Disable iCloud Drive with associated APPs.
  • Keep minimum notifications from APPs.
  • Charge iPhone when battery level dropped to 30%.
  • Uncheck lists under Safari/Advanced/Experimental Features.
  • Update all installed APPs.

Battery drain and overheating are basically under control.

Now, I reboot my iPhone X often more.

Hello, first post. I am also experiencing this issue on my good old pocket friendly iPhone SE (got it in 2016). I have tried all the suggestions without success. I had the battery replaced at the end of the replacement program, and I am at 96% battery health at the moment. Heats up like crazy while not using any apps. All background options that I could find are turned off.

One very interesting thing I notice, is that through an app I have called "Status", I can track graphically over time the resource usage of the CPU, Memory, Battery, and Storage.

When my phone gets real hot, the resource usage graph shows the CPU usage going up to about 50%, every time. I can do a hard shut down, and then the graph will show the usage down to about 5%, and it runs cool for a while. But inevitably, heats up again later. And like many of the other posts, it started soon after IOS 13.5, and is still happening under IOS 13.6. Matter of fact, I was monitoring the graph as I am typing this, and it jumped up to 50% without me touching the phone.

It is not clear here in your post about the ambient temperature in your area where you are using the iPhone. However --> Keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable ...

Store the device where the temperature is between -20º and 45º C (-4º to 113º F). Don’t leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.

Use iOS devices where the ambient temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might cause the device to change its behavior to regulate its temperature. Using an iOS device in very cold conditions outside of its operating range might temporarily shorten battery life and could cause the device to turn off. Battery life will return to normal when you bring the device back to higher ambient temperatures. Using an iOS device in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life.

My device (iPhone 11 Pro) has the same issue. Battery health at 100% but is dead half way through the day. Heating up while doing nothing that would cause for extra processing power to consume anything. I have been talking to Apple Support on Twitter and seems like it’s not something that’s being looked at as an issue. I have been told to factory wipe my device to fix issue that was not an issue until after 13.5 on 5/20/20.
