Keychain reset

A few months ago I needed to enter my keychain password but, I forgot what it was and had never needed to access my keychain before that. All I ever did was select to add the password or update my keychain. So, finally I reset my keychain and thought that all my existing passwords were still in the keychain, not true. Of course reset means I added a new keychain. So, now when I access my keychain via Utilities it looks like I have two sets of keychains.

1) Is it possible to consolidate my keychains ?

2) If I wanted to change my keychain password via Utilities, keychain access, edit, "change password for keychain" that choice is greyed out. It seems like my keychain is a mess. Is there a way I can clean this up ?

Resetting a keychain will not transfer passwords. Where would the security be if you could just reset it and change the password?

If you still have the old keychain, the password should be the same one you use to log into your account, unless you changed it.


You cannot change the password on the default keychain. You have to change the default keychain to another, then change the password.
