i have macbook 7.1 and it is stuck on

Hi All, I have a very old MacBook 7.1 and up until now has worked really well- I had an issue with my Mac that meant I thought it was updating the software but in fact wasn’t. So now I’m trying to catch it up. However on trying to update to OS El Capitan it has gotten stuck on the update bar, then says it is not compatible with laptop, so I quit OS Updater and restart but then just repeats the whole process. I’ve tried first aid on the discs, I’ve tried updating the settings, I’ve tried the options+ command+ p+ R , I’ve tried shift key turning it on, I’ve tried options + command + R and I’m now out of ideas. I’ve attached images of responses I’ve got from the laptop. any ideas For fixes or insights into what’s wrong with it would be greatly

appreciated.many thanks

MacBook, OS X 10.11

It is possible you have an old version of the installer where the certificate has expired. Before selecting "Reinstall macOS, launch the Terminal app from the Utilities menu and change the date using this command (press the "Return" key at the end of the command to execute it):

date -u 0110120018

Then try "Reinstalling macOS". If it still doesn't work, then reboot the computer and try again since the computer may need rebooted after changing the date. Once macOS is installed make sure to update your Date & Time in System Preferences.

If this doesn't work and you have access to another Mac, then download the new macOS 10.11 El Capitan installer or even macOS 10.13 High Sierra installer. You can find links within this Apple article including instructions on how to create a bootable macOS USB installer:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372

Read the instructions very carefully if you try to download the 10.11 installer as there are several steps to the process.

Amy,

Three questions,

  1. Do you have the original disks for this computer or a 10.6 Snow Leopard install disk?
  2. Do you have a backup of this computer?
  3. Is there stuff on this computer you want to keep?

And of course a fourth question, what OS does the computer have on it now?

In the meantime, you can try repairing the disk with Disk Utility from the screen you posted that says, OSX Utilities. Start Disk Utility and run disk first aid.

Hi Psydye,

thankyou so much for your quick response. I followed all your suggestions but seems to be stuck on installing OS X. Here’s what happened, pics to show:

  1. option + command + P + R (resetting NVRAM / PRAM)
  • on turning on & pressing above combo, loaded up with apple icon & loading bar (see pic). Stayed on this for 5 mins
  • Next it went automatically to installing OS X El Capitan On “Macintosh HD” - stayed on this for about 10 mins, auto restarted and showed OS Could not be installed on your computEr (see pic).

2.Command + R (rebooting in recovery mode)

• held and let go after 2nd restart & restart chime

• apple logo and loading bar came on screen (see pic)

• followed by languages reset box (see pic)- selected English

• then utilities box came up, clicked “reinstall OS X” (see pic)

• agreed terms and conditions and prompted me to sign into App Store (did) and clicked install on “Macintosh HD” (see pics)

• went automatically to “downloading additional components. Your computer will restart automatically”. See pic. Stayed on this for about an hr.

• auto restarted and showed could not download box, packages not eligible.see pic.

Any more ideas? : (

Amy

Hello Amyelliott2020,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. From your message and your screenshots it looks like the OS X on your Macintosh HD is not showing as a startup drive.

The first thing to do will be to reset the NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac. The NVRAM and PRAM are a part of the memory where certain settings, such as the startup disk are stored. Resetting it can allow the computer to "find" the disk again. Follow the steps in this article: Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac

If the MacBook still will not start up, you'll want to boot into the recovery partition and reinstall the operating system. You'll only want to use the Command (⌘) + R command, as your computer may not have the option to boot into Internet Recovery.

Once you are in OS X Recovery follow the steps in this article: How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery. The article references macOS Recovery, as the newer operating systems are now macOS, and the older are OS X. The steps remain the same.

All the best.
