I have elderly parents that occasionally need help on using their iMac. I live 3 time zones away so I need a solution that will enable me to log onto their computer and share their screen and actually work remotely. I have done some research and it appears their are some apps that provide this, but I am looking for a simple straightforward easy to use solution. Can any one advise?

I use TeamViewer for exactly this. Free for domestic use and is password-controlled for access. Also works for non-Mac computers, and quite happy controlling a remote virtual machine in Parallels.
FWIW, I also would use TeamViewer.
