HBOMax Will Not Sign In

Apples email said that my subscription included total access to HBOMax and when the date rolled around to download the HBOMax app and then sign in with my Apple ID.

i downloaded the app. But it will not accept my Apple ID for signing in. Has Apple miscommunicated the procedure or is there a problem on day one with sign in?

They in fact did not. Through some footwork after visiting and commenting on this thread, I found that one can sign in with their Apple ID. It takes a bit of doing. You need to go to the HBO Max site, then sign in through the provider portal. It showcases a selection of providers outside of cable/mobile provider options you can navigate to. It has the option to select Apple TV. Once you select this, you can then sign in with your Apple ID which will have you enter info into their system for easy login access to link the accounts.

None of which is addressed in their response as it only pertains to HBO Now and not the HBO subscription via Apple TV Channel.

After downloading the HBO Max app you need to sign in to the app in order to watch HBO Max content

1) Existing HBO for Apple TV Channels subscriber, you select “Already subscribed? Sign In”

2) Select “Sign In Through TV or Mobile Provider”

3) In the list of TV Providers, for HBO subscribers to Apple TV Channels you select “Other TV Providers”

4) Select "Apple TV" as the provider

5) Click Continue to the message HBOMAX wants to use HBO.com to Sign In

6) And then you are finally present with the message to enter your Apple ID to watch HBO Max subscription

Ok. I promise I tried this initially (looking through the mobile providers list at the HBOMax site) and Apple TV was not in the list (pc web browser and TVOS app). But it’s clearly there now. I was able to select it and then sign in and two-factor on my phone and repeat for one ATV and it worked. And, unsurprisingly, I had to create an HBM account (with no password as it’s billed thru Apple). But wow! That’s quite a lot of effort.

Hello CrabApples123,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

I understand from your post that you are unable to sign into HBO Max with your Apple ID and password. HBO Max has its own email and password to sign in which may be different than your Apple ID and password. The HBO Max website has some additional information which you may find helpful:

Access to all of HBO Max

"SIGN IN TO HBO MAX

Sign in to HBO Max using your HBO NOW email and password on any supported device."

Best Regards.

Apple sent out an email specifically saying we just needed to sign-in with our Apple ID. I have HBO via the Apple TV channel. So, I don’t have an HBO Now log-in nor would anyone else who subscribes through the Apple TV channel. The email and articles released about this new launch stated that subscribers would have access without extra charge and use the Apple ID to sign in.

The link you provided is only applicable to those who have a HBO Now account already which would require having had the independent app and a subscription through the app and not through the Apple TV channel.

Bekah272 conveyed it perfectly. There was supposed to be an upgrade path to HBOMax for Apple customers with the HBO channel subscription. But it is not working. I’ve got a case open that went from tech to ITunes to a senior rep and is now in the hands of engineering. They can obviously have me cancel my channel subscription and then create an HBOMax account, but then Apple will learn nothing of why this is happening to its channel subscribers.

I'll post results of the investigation which they say could take 4 days.

What Apple TV model do you have?( https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT200008) If you have the Apple TV HD or 4K version, when you sign in to the Apple TV and enter your password another box should appear prompting you to enter the 6 digit verification code. If you have an older Apple TV model like Apple TV 3rd gen, make sure to check that you are running the latest software update. Sign in to the Apple TV and enter your password + 6 digits code if the box is displayed otherwise enter the password and 6 digits verification code together (i.e. - "password123456")
