Thank you for your help. Finally managed to connect the two!:

iMac (27-inch, late 2009) + MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)

Apple does not have the necessary cables, however, this works:

LMP USB-C adapter Mini-DisplayPort

LMP Mini-DisplayPort Cable Mini-DisplayPort

Hello catja225,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand that you are trying to use an iMac 27-inch (late 2009) as an external display using target display mode. I would recommend taking a look at the following support article to setup and then troubleshoot using your iMac as a display.

You can not use the Apple ThunderBolt-3 <--> ThunderBolt-2 adapter For any displays EXCEPT genuine thunderBolt displays. it does NOT provide a workable Mini DisplayPort signal.

This adapter is not compatible with displays that use DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort, such as the Apple LED Cinema Display. Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 are not the same as Mini DisplayPort , though the ports have the same shape.
