Battery drain while plugged in

I updated to Mac OS 10.15.5 yesterday. While working today, I noticed that the battery was being used even though I had the laptop plugged into the 61W charger it came with. The activity monitor says that the "Battery is not charging"; however, the battery icon on the status bar icon has a lightning symbol. It also notes "Power Source: Power Adapter." I tried unplugging & replugging, but the result does not change. This laptop has been through 30 charge cycles. I'm not sure if this is because of the new battery management feature in the new update or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Shevy734,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

I understand from your question that your computer is not charging even though it is plugged into the original charger. I can certainly help you with this!

I would refer to this article as well as the articles listed in it for your particular issue: If your Mac battery status is “Not Charging”

I hope this is able to resolve your issue. If you have any more questions or this does not resolve your issue, please reach back out on the thread!

Cheers.

I'm also having this issue. It began right after I updated to 10.15.5 (from 10.15.4). There are no apps or processes using any significant amount of energy, yet about once a day, the battery will run down to around 85% before charging back to 100.

Also, in general throughout the day, the battery will be draining at anywhere from 0.01 to 1 watts even though it is plugged in without any significant power drains.

I am using a 89 Watt charging module that came with the computer, and this problem has never occurred until I updated to 10.15.5. There is at least one other user having the same issue https://apple.co/2YhNUGC

I've tried resetting the SMC, NVRAM, and reinstalling MacOS. My suspicion is that this is related to the battery health management, but all affected users would appreciate if Apple can issue a statement and/or release a patch for this issue. It is very frustrating to see. Moreover, this issue is causing about 15-20% of excess charging cycles per day, which is degrading my battery. Please help us.

No, I have another appointment Monday at the Apple store. My max capacity of the battery was being significantly reduced with this feature. I turned it off for the time being. I’ve only had my laptop for a few months so I’m not sure why my laptop is behaving this way. I’m sorry this is happening to you as well. I just kinda swept it under the rug, I’m so frustrated.

I have been having this same issue on my MBP 16". You're not alone. I understand your frustration. I've contacted Apply numerous times and they never answered my question if my battery was draining as part of the new feature. They told me the same steps. Resetting the SMC NRAM etc. None of these fixed the problem. I took my laptop to the Apple Store and not even with 24 hours of them "fixing" the problem (wiping the laptop and reinstalling MacOS) the same thing happened. Very disappointed that my professional computer is not functioning properly.
