Ever since I got my Apple Watch and connected it to my iPhone SE via Bluetooth the phone no longer announces incoming texts with a text tone. When I turn off Bluetooth on the watch I hear the text tone on my phone. Is this normal?

I did get the watch to start notifying me of incoming text messages. The chime is barely audible in a quiet environment and impossible to hear outside. The haptic vibration is noticeable.
To get it to work I opened the Watch App on my iPhone and opened the Messages controls. Mirror my iPhone was originally selected. Changing it to Custom seems to have solved the problem. The Sound and Haptic Alerts also need to be turned on.
As far as I can tell, from my dealing with this for over a year, the Mirror my iPhone setting seems to turn off the message alert tones on both the iPhone and the watch. Weird.
I also noticed that the when the watch is not on my wrist the Message alert tone is sounded on the phone instead of the watch. Cool.
Getting notifications on the watch would be great. The only problem is there no text tone or vibration alert to tell the wearer when a text comes in. I have the watch volume and vibration both set to maximum and nothing happens when a text come in. The only way to tell if you have a new text on the watch is to look at the face to see if there is a 🔴. That’s great except you never know what the red dot 🔴 is there for until you swipe on the face. To me that is not ideal.
Slide up for Control Center and see if the sound is muted or if you are in Theater mode.
Not in theater mode and sound is turned on.
Then try a forced restart, hold down both buttons until you see the Apple logo then let go of the buttons.
Forced restart did not help.
Let me ask this a different way: Is there a sound or vibration that should be playing on the watch when a text message comes in?
Yes, mine makes a tone and vibrates for text messages.
