Ipad Pro and ext. hd

Can i use an external hard drive with the new ipad pro? The specs said I can connect external devices so I ordered one but someone told me I cannot connect my ext. h.d., which is essential to my use of my files with this.

Yes, if you have an iPad with iPadOS 13 installed, subject to some caveats, it is possible to connect and use external storage devices with your iPad.

Dependent upon the model of your iPad, you may need an appropriate adapter.

If you have a 2018 or 2020 iPad Pro, with a USB-C port, an adapter is not required.

Your external storage device must have only a single data partition - and be formatted to either FAT32, exFAT or APFS. Multiple partitions or proprietary Microsoft formats, such as NTFS, are not supported by iPadOS.

Your next consideration is power. The iPad cannot supply adequate power for the vast majority of external storage devices. If the storage device is not self powered, connecting both the storage devices and iPad to a powered USB hub should suffice. If using the Adapter detailed above, you should connect a Power Adapter (charger) rated at 12W or greater.
