I have recently inherited my Dad's old but fabulous iMac 11,2 and due to working from home for the foreseeable want to hook it up as a second screen from my MacBook Air.
Speaking to Apple Support I need to use 'Targeted Display' and source a 3rd party cable to connect the two.
I wondered if anyone knows if all I need is a USB to USB C cable or if I should be using the Mini Display Port on the iMac to USB C

you need to look if the iMac has a Mini Display port or a Thunderbolt 2 port: Identify the ports on your Mac - Apple Support
Depending on that you need to choose your adapter.

Display: 1920 x 1080
This is my MacBook Air which I wish to extend the display from:
MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2019)
Display: 13.3-inch (2560 x 1600)
Please tell us the year and display size of your Dad's iMac. In addition we need to know what computer type (Mac or PC) you want to use it with.

Nope, not a chance.
Nope, not going to work. The only models from 2010 that would work are the 27" iMacs. In short, if you need an external display for the MBA then you need to buy one. Oh, there are no work arounds for the 2010.
