apple mail gmail account error

I get the following error message randomly on both iPads when accessing Apple mail. The message only stays a few second and you cannot access “detail’. Help...it’s driving me crazy!

OK.

I suggest the following then:

Go to Settings > Passwords & Accounts > Gmail and choose “Delete Account”
Then go to Settings > Passwords & Accounts > Add Account and choose “Google”

Go to:

Settings > Passwords & Accounts > Gmail > Account > Gmail SMTP Server > Gmail SMTP Server (again)

... and enter your Gmail username and password.

Thank you so much for trying to help me. I followed your excellent instructions. While the username and password says optional, it is a lighter gray and won’t allow me to enter. See pic
