I just got a hand me down mac book!

Hi, so i have just been given a 2011 macbook pro! I'm excited to have access to a mac again after 10 years of waiting to be able to buy one. I waited long enough for my dad to replace his first macbook, so now i need to know if i can put the newest os onto this old computer somehow? It has OS X Yosemite, I can do whatever it takes since it was a freebie! Thanks for any help,

Maximillian

Naw, not damaged, it's just that you have an old copy already in Applications, there are 2 cures...

Disconnect from the Internet & set the Date back to 2014, then you can run the Install MacsOS High Sierra App in Applications, so expired Certificates are not expired.

Or... trash the Install MacsOS High Sierra.app in Applications then a new copy can be downloaded.

Yeah Catalina or Mojave cannot be installed on your 2011 Mac, the highest would be High Sierra which is still available.

The model and year of your Mac will determine which macOS you can upgrade to,

please use Safari to access the following links, do not use Firefox

How to upgrade to macOS High Sierra - Apple Support

How to upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support

Before upgrading make a full back up of your Mac.

Check that third party apps you use have updates available for the new OS.

https://roaringapps.com

Check that your printers/ scanners etc have updated drivers and software available for the new OS.

Connect your mac to your router via cable rather than rely on WiFi.

Do not use your mac while it is downloading

and do not use any other devices that share the same internet connection.

Well, I used your link, thanks. On that page I used the link for i still need high Sierra. That link takes me to the app store page for high sierra. So far so good, on that page I clicked the open button and i get pop up that says "this copy of the install macOS High Sierra application is damaged, and can't be used to install macOS." Thanks for helping
