Apple Watch

My friend gave me an Apple Watch that he is not using anymore. It is a Apple Watch 5. He bought it from his cellular carrier and had it in his phone plan. I currently have a Apple Watch 3 but it is not connected to my cellular plan I just have to be with 30 feet of my phone. Will I be able to activate the Apple Watch five to my iPhone without adding it to my phone plan for cellular data since he originally bought it that away?
