Charging of the G.2 Apple Pen

Does anyone know if the G.2 Apple Pen can be charges in another way than being attached to the side of an iPad?

At my workplace I have 30 iPads in hard case covers and I would really like not to have to take off the cover every time I need to charge the pen.
