I was told by Vodafone Ireland online support to contact Apple to unlock my phone.
I filled in online form to unlock my iPhone and Vodafone support told me to contact Apple directly, strange.

Unlock? It depends on the unlock situation:
Unlock 1 = Apple ID locked:--> If your Apple ID is locked or disabled - Apple Support
Unlock 2 = Passcode forgotten:--> If you forgot the passcode on your iPhone, or your iPhone is disabled
Unlock 3 = SIM not supported:--> How to unlock your iPhone for use with a different carrier - Apple Support
