Error updating MacOS (kernel cache)

Every time Apple release a MacOS update my iMac will not install it directly, giving the attached error (in Dutch: Error at kernel cache generation).

Only way to install the update is to then run Recovery mode and do a new install.

1 important thing to note: I run my late 2013 iMac from an external SSD (not the internal HD).

Any ideas would be super welcome.

Thanks.

Hey HansC,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

I see from your post that you're having issues with downloading macOS Catalina. I'd love to help out.

I'd start with trying to download the combo update here:

Download macOS Catalina 10.15.2 Combo Update

If that doesn't work, try upgrading in safe mode:

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Let us know if that helps.

Cheers!

Dear Moon,

Thanks for taking the time to try solve my issue.

Must say that I do not think this is the solution. Downloading is not the problem I have. Every time Apple releases a Catalina update, I see it in System Preferences, and can download the update just fine. The problem I have is when I try installing it: every single update I get results in this error 'cannot generate kernel cache'.

As I wrote, the only solution is then to restart in recovery mode and do a clean install.

Not sure if the fact that I run the iMac from an external SSD had anything to do with it, but it's the only differentiating factor with the normal setup.

Thanks for keeping on thinking.

Hans
