iPhone XR, sound is poor, cuts out, and sometimes sounds as if I am garbled or underwater, to my contacts. Additionally, I have been getting static interference, and now Google app keeps quitting.

iPhone XR

Does anyone have issues with sound on their iPhone?

My contacts indicate that my voice constantly clips out, or, I sound as though I am underwater.

I have taken it in to the Apple Store, where it was checked for moisture, settings, etc. and everything was determined to be fine. It was suggested that I obtain a new SIM card, which I then did at the Verizon store.

Currently, I have been getting loud, buzzing static sounds, and my Google app keeps quitting.

This phone isn't yet a year old. I have been reluctant to send it in due to being without a phone.

iPhone XR, iOS 13

Matisse789,

Thank you for reaching out at Apple Support Communities today. If I understand correctly you’re experiencing an issue where your voice is unclear during phone calls as well as a concern with the Google app unexpectedly quitting on your iPhone XR running iOS 13. It sounds like you’ve already taken some exemplary steps in bringing your iPhone to the Apple Store to have a technician look it over. If they weren’t able to find a noticeable hardware issue, it’s likely it is software or environmental. I’m happy to offer a few suggestions to help you narrow it down a little further.

First, with your Google app, try the steps outlined here. There are some great tips for resolving the exact concern in this article:

Regarding the issue where you’re not able to be clearly heard, I would start by testing to see if it’s a microphone issue. Follow the guidance here first:

Are you able to use the microphone in some apps but not others? Is it only present when you’re on a call? If you aren’t able to record voice memos, use the speakerphone, or get Siri to respond you may have a mic issue. If you don’t feel that it’s a microphone issue after testing, I would try restoring with a computer and setting it up without your backup. This is a time-intensive step, but this process reinstalls the iOS software on your device and will definitively let you know whether the issue is software related.

Remember to make sure you have an iCloud backup or an encrypted iTunes/Finder backup before restoring your iPhone. I don’t want you to lose any important data while testing. When you set up your iPhone after the restore, set it up without your backup to make a couple of calls and see if it improves your call quality. You can restore your backup (if you wish) after you make a few test calls.

I look forward to hearing how it goes.

Cheers.
