Precautions for updating FCPX from 10.4.5 to 10.4.8 that needs also updating my MacOS Mojave from 10.4.1 to 10.14.6

Good evening. I have purchased a bunch of generators that I'm unable to open in FCPX. Upon contacting the seller I was informed that my present version of FCPX, 10.4.5 has to be updated to 10.4.8. I have also become aware that I have need to upgrade my MacOS Mojave from 10.4.1 to 10.14.6. Having need to do this double upgrades is making me a bit wary. I know how to upgrade but would want to know of issues that may crop up with this double upgrade.

I trust I will be helped in this matter. Thanking you in advance.

Thanks Luis for this further help. Yeah, I'll remember not to forget the zipping part...as on some rare occasions I had forgotten to zip my trousers:).

My current Mac is just a year old and hopefully it should take on the new OS just as a powerful horse adjusts to the weight of a weighty man sitting upon it.

What, BTW is COMBO Update? Is it offered as a separate choice in the Apple store?

Thanks once again.

Hi, after the above question I tried to see what files I could upload. I was able to upload only the Logo Reveal 044 file that is described to be a Motion project. What do I do next? Do I place the downloaded file in the original folder? Or, [using my own logic] do I make a copy of the original template folder and then replace the original motion project file with the new mofified motion file? Wish there was some video to illustrate this procedure!

No! Upload the the actual Motion file (looks like Logo Reveal 044). The converter page will only accept .motn, .moti, .moef and .motr files.

I'm a little concerned by the appearance of the Motion icon on the template file — it looks like it is older than the current icon used.

Right click on the template file and Get Info. Check the Modified Date. Check it against this list:

https://fcpxtemplates.com/fcpx-motion-compatibility/

Please read the Instructions & Notes section before proceeding.

I've had very good success using this and when a user requests a backdated copy of my templates, I use this same tool.

Thanks Fox. The motion file was created on 25th May 2020 and modified also the same date. The checklist you have referred to stops in 2019. I have good belief that the creator has used the latest version of FCPX and Motion.

Can I rename the downloaded motion file to the same template folder where the original is?

Will the generator have all the features as it would have if operating in the latest version of FCPX?

Simply replace the original Motion template file. All the script is doing is changing a couple of lines of the XML in the template file. You should replace the original with the file with the **exact same name** as the uploaded file. If you've backed up the original, then you can simply drag and drop the converted file in the Motion template folder then select to Replace the original from the dialog popup.

Thanks for this input. Actually I went ahead to do this: I have added your name [Fox] to the downloaded file and dragged into the original folder. The result is this: Two templates are appearing in the browser window under generators tab: one template is not active [showing missing file alert] while the other template is active. Is this workflow okay or should I take out your motion files out, back up the original, and then have a new set where the original motion files are replaced with the downloaded files having **exact same name*?

The file name should not be changed. You should move the original out of the template folder and move the modified file into its place. You can simply rename the modified file to the exact same name as the original, there's no need to go through the converter a second time. Motion template files are not really anything special -- they're just XML.

If you already moved a copy of the original out of the Template folder, you can simply drag and drop the converted file onto the Template folder and select Replace from the dialog box when the Finder asks you if you want to replace it.

When you get the converted download, it frequently shows the extension for the file (.motn, .moti, etc...). You can turn that back off by using Get Info in the Finder and turning on "Hide Extension".
