Freeing Up Space With "harddisk.hdd.0" Document

I just bought the new MacBook Air with 256GB of storage and was dismayed to find that over half of the storage was already taken up. Specifically, it seems that a document called "harddisk.hdd.0" was taking nearly 75GB of storage. What is this document? Is it safe if I delete it? If not, is there any way that I can free up space on my machine? Thanks.

Hello tan hooey,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand that you just bought a new MacBook Air and discovered tat over half of the storage was already taken up by a file called "harddisk.hdd.0". You can take a look at the following support article to manage the storage on your MacBook Air.

If this is a brand new computer and if you haven't added anything to the computer, another option is to erase the hard drive and reinstall the macOS. The following support articles will provide the steps to erase the hard drive and then reinstall macOS on the MacBook Air.
