4K UHD at 60Hz

I've seen lots of information about all this and I'm trying to narrow down how to resolve this (one resolution being acceptance that it doesn't work). I hope that someone can answer my question.

Can my MacBook Pro Retina 2013/2014 model do 4K UHD?

Do I need to use the display port?

Do I need to use a mini display port to display port cable? (I currently have mini display port to HDMI and I can only get 30Hz).

Can someone recommend a good cable?

I have read the support article that talks about MST support on the MacBook but I can't see where it says what cable to use (such as don't use HDMI it won't work).

Hi there, I just wanted to follow up on this.

I ordered a mini display port to display port cable shortly before asking this question and the cable has now arrived. I can report that I can indeed run the monitor at 60Hz and at 4K UHD from this model of MacBook Pro.

I appreciate the help you gave and hope that folks who find this post in the future will find it helpful.

Thanks!

Hello randomfusion,

Thanks for posting on Apple Support Communities. I understand you are connecting a 4K UHD display to your MacBook Pro Retina 2014 using the mini display port to HDMI. After doing some research I believe that the system requirements for 4k UHD output are a MacBook Pro 2016 or later. It requires a Mac with a USB-C port or Thunderbolt 3 port, running OS Mojave or later. This information can be found specifically in the Find out whether you need an adapter section of this article Use external monitors with your Mac. You can find the entire list of system requirements within that resource.

I hope this was helpful. If you still have questions you can also Contact Apple Support.

Cheers!

Thank you for the help! Is there any chance you could point me in the direction of the information you found about the model and 4K UHD support? I've found contradictory information.

Has information stating that the 4K support came in with my models and later on the Thunderbolt 2 port.

Curious if this is wrong or there is something im doing wrong.
