how do I restore text messages from the cloud?

One person's text messages have disappeared prior to those from yesterday. How do I restore them?

If you were using Messages in iCloud and deleted them from iCloud, then you cannot retrieve them as they are gone. If you weren't then you can possibly restore from a backup to a time when the messages were around.
