MacBook Pro freezes when external monitor connected

All,

i've searched the community but couldn't find exact reference to what I'm suffering. Have previously had a mid-2014 MBP connected to an HP 2211x via mini-Displayport to DVI cable. All has worked fine.

Just bought a new 2020 MBP with 4x Thunderbolt 3 ports running Catalina 10.15.5 and a CalDigit TS3 hub. Connecting the monitor to the CalDigit hub via Displayport to DVI cable freezes the MBP. No interaction appears possible. Disconnecting the Displayport cable resolves the issue.

I also purchased a USB-C to mini-displayport adapter to attempt to plug the cable directly to the MBP and bypass the hub. Exactly the same behaviour.

Is this a known issue? Are there any remedies? Do I need a new monitor perhaps?

Grateful for any info as my productivity has halved since 'upgrading' my MBP.

Thanks!

Hi quicksilver733,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today. It sounds like you have a new MacBook Pro that you are connecting to a monitor with DVI. This freezes your MacBook Pro with an adapter and hub.

While you may need to contact the manufacturer of the adapter and hub to find out about compatibility, you can see if the behavior exists inside a new user account: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac.

If the issue happens inside a new user, more than likely the third party hardware just isn't compatible.

Also take a look at this page: Adapters for the Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C port on your Mac or iPad Pro and be sure you have the correct adapter or cable. There might be another solution.

Have a fantastic day!
