screen cracked and always "busy" : fixable?

I assume replacing the screen on my GF's iphone 8 will not fix it as I cannot power it off or reset it. It just shows the busy circle and gets hot and I keep it in the icebox when it gets to hot. I assume the battery will eventually go dead. Any suggestions or experience?

[edit] not sure why windows is shown for this post. It is iphone 8 with latest ios. Crack is very faint but I can feel it with fingernail. almost didnt see the crack.

Ok, talked to tech support (Verizon) and looked at phone again. The crack is in the protective cover only. Phone just wont power off or reset. Verizon said to let the battery run down and see if that fixes the problem If not then bring it in for warrantee. I assume if it never turns back on we can use insurance plan to exchange.
