I want to back up my iPhone XR to my Mac - when the phone is plugged in and shows in the Finder, the option to back up to my Mac is greyed out. I am on a strong wifi system and my Mac is connected to a power source so I don't know why this keeps happening. I have tried unplugging the phone and plugging it back in but that doesn't resolve the issue. All my devices are up to date with the latest operating systems.

Do you have "Sync automatically when this phone is connected” enabled? It’s the default, and it will back up automatically when you connect the phone, which will grey out the back up button.

Uninstalling Malware Bytes did allow me to back up my phone - I hope I don't have to continue to uninstall it every time I want to do this but at least I know now how to solve the problem.

Antivirus maybe? Do you have any on your Mac? Also, this can happen if some app is using the backup channel. Have you used any third-party apps with a backup option recently?
There was an issue with Malwarebytes when it blocked backups on Win. Try uninstalling it if you still have it on your computer, then restart and try to back up.
Third-party apps -- PhoneView, iExplorer, iMazing, basically any iTunes alternative app. If you haven't installed anything similar lately -- it should be smth else.
Let the developer of Malwarebytes know about. I’m sure they can fix it.
I don't have any antivirus software installed - I use Malware Bytes periodically. I don't know what you mean re backup channels and third party apps... please elaborate as to where I might find this information.
This might do it - the auto sync option is enabled although I unchecked that the last time. I still had the greyed out section. It keeps gong back to that setting and I can’t change it and make it STAY changed.
I can’t uncheck that auto sync box and not have it reappear when I connect my phone again. I can uncheck it as soon as my phone info appears but it is ALWAYS checked again when I plug in my phone. It doesn't indicate that a back up has been made to my Mac as that option remains greyed out. Please see attached screenshot.
