my 2017 mac air won’t get to log in screen. screen is grey with lines running from top to bottom

How can I start a 2017 Mac Air in Safe Mode? It is stuck in grey with lines from top to bottom.

To load your MacBook Air in Safe Mode, press and hold the Shift key while it boots.
