ipad transfers

I am getting an ipad 5 to replace an 2 which requires transferring backup from iOS 9 to iOS 12 , can this be done ?

Basically you make a backup of the old one and transfer the data to the new one.

Will give it a try, thought I read it could not be done from iOS 9 as it wasn't compatible.
