iOS 13.5.1 battery drain

The battery drain from background activity in iOS 13.5.1 is horrible. Happens on several apps, currently Bloom berg and Teamsnap. Same problem on my iPad and my wife's iPhone Xs. Come on Apple, this needs to be fix now!

in that case it is apps that have not been modified to run on the new OS and have runaway background usage, Viber fir example.

or a busted phone.

Nothing in 13.5.1 itself is causing this.

So to test this ( yes effort required)

  • backup
  • restore to factory settings as though you were selling it - see https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201351
  • Set it up with your apple account
  • Check battery usage in that vanilla environment.
  • Restore from backup.

OK you have some in-depth knowledge, we are just guessing..

Are you saying a change in iOS 13.5.1 (BGScheduleTask) was made and developers were not told to change their apps in the bulletins?

Do they show up in the battery settings graphs?

I only had one free app run away like that in background and I ditched it, but none of my other apps do it as far as I know.

This update is a total nightmare. Ipad does not shut down correctly and has a 30-40% battery drain after 24 hours of being switched off. The apple logo appears far faster on startup rather than a delay that is when you know the battery will be massively down on startup. Only started doing this when ios 13.5.1 was installed on iPad pro 2018.

lol at least the alarm clock app is justified. I work at a fire station and we don’t have clocks in our room when we sleep, so I use that for 8 hours a night when I work to see the time at night. 16% was for about 2 hours onscreen without the phone plugged in (which was unintentional, I usually have it plugged in). This pic is from today and I turned off Siri an hour ago.

So, in the mean time 9 pages only on this forum...

I don't know the way of living in the States, but here in Belgium, a lot of people are Apple owners because of their privacy policy and their stability.

This problem is present since +/- a month ???

I'm getting a little bit angry about it.

iOS becomes more and more sophisticated. A bug could be normal, but by Apples tradition it should be solved within a week or so. That's the reason Apple's customers buy Apple products.

Very disappointed at this moment! Hopefully it's an isolated case. If it becomes "normal" they certainly loose me as a customer.

I hate to say it but I definitely felt hostility from two people on here who were esteemed and frequent posters judging by their profile and points. They undermine and are defensive of Apple and they tend to victim blame if you will. Perhaps they don't realize it. Kinda like when my kid tells me I'm yelling and I tell them I'm not...but then I listen to myself and ...I'm yelling:) They don't realize how egotistical and annoying and antagonistic they sound. Anyway.

I'm in the middle of setting up a new replacement phone (xs 256 verizon) as new with 13.5.1 I'll load new apps one by one. And then I'll charge my new one and old one (which was apparently fixed by the reset) to 100. And ill compare the battery use and get back to you.

Johnmorello, you have even a worser battery consumption as I have. Maybe I use my phone less as you do.

Could you please confirm if you had battery drainers (apps who drains battery while running in the background even if they are not permitted to do so) before the phone change? If so, are those apps stopped with doing so after the reset/phone change?

Today it's the first time I listened internetradio (via TuneIn) the whole day since iOS 13.5. I consumed less battery as before iOS13.5.1. So this version has advantages...

Just before the release of 13.5 I did a complete reset and restored every app manually (because lots of rubbish and never used apps on my phone.) It took a complete Sunday afternoon...

I really like to do this again if this solves the background drain. If not, it's waste of time...

thanks for the info!

The strangest thing is that I had just charged it to 100% and then it stayed 100% for about an hour just sitting there. Then I decided to shut my iPhone SE 1st Gen off using the power button. Then I immediately turned it back on and the battery was down to 97%. Then as I was watching it, the battery went down quickly to 93% then to 90% then to 86% then to 84%, all within less than a minute while the phone was doing nothing. So I checked Battery under Settings and it said in the last 24 hours my Camera app was 55% of the activity. It said "Camera" with "Audio" right below it. What audio? Does it mean video? In any case, the Camera app was not even open over the past 24 hours! Then an hour later, I checked again and now it says the Camera had zero activity. So the Camera app went from 55% activity to zero activity over the past 24 hours in under an hour, all without the Camera app even being open?

There's something seriously wrong with this 13.5.1 update. My phone has never done this before. Not sure if the Battery settings or battery indicator is just going bananas after this update. It's as if my phone is possessed and is just doing stuff all on its own in the background and screwing with the battery.

Well, an hour later my activity for the Camera app over the past 24 hours went back up from zero to 48% even though the app was not even open. And this morning, after being plugged in overnight, the battery was at 100% but as soon as I opened the Google and Microsoft Translate apps for a minute, the battery immediately dropped to 71% in a few seconds. Definitely the battery and/or the battery indicator is exhibiting very abnormal behavior ever since upgrading to 13.5.1.

On top of battery drain and my phone not charging past 80% even with battery optimization turned off, I have this issue now as well, I’m very frustrated with Apple and my 3 month old iPhone 11 Pro!!! Look at the attached step drop, crazy. I have never experienced this before and I’ve been on iPhone since the 4... I’ve done so many different things to troubleshoot this now, yes I have also restored iOS 13.5.1 without restoring my backup. I just don’t understand how some people aren’t experiencing these issues.
