iOS 13.5.1 battery drain

The battery drain from background activity in iOS 13.5.1 is horrible. Happens on several apps, currently Bloom berg and Teamsnap. Same problem on my iPad and my wife's iPhone Xs. Come on Apple, this needs to be fix now!

in that case it is apps that have not been modified to run on the new OS and have runaway background usage, Viber fir example.

or a busted phone.

Nothing in 13.5.1 itself is causing this.

So to test this ( yes effort required)

  • backup
  • restore to factory settings as though you were selling it - see https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201351
  • Set it up with your apple account
  • Check battery usage in that vanilla environment.
  • Restore from backup.

Here in Belgium I have the same issue as many others, but I encounter them often with apps used only in Belgium and the Netherlands I guess.

The background drainers are HLN, iCulture and sometimes Buienalarm.

I've had also the clues to update my iPhone via Mac/PC.

So I made an iCloud backup, restored my XsMax via DFU on my iMac (running latest available macOS Catalina). After installing Face id etc, I Setted back the iCloud backup.

First 3-4 days a massive battery drain including the running background apps. I know this is a normal behaviour after a clean install or a big update.

The drain has been stabilised now, but I have to do a forced shutdown of the mentioned apps, otherwise my Phone is almost completely out of battery after the working day. This isn't solved yet after the 4 days.

So the update via computer isn't a solution.

@peter_watt: it seems like you don't suffer the issue. In the beginning of this topic, people are reporting of some so called "infected" apps. Maybe you could install them on your phone and check the result.

If, in my case, I don't use iCulture or HLN, I was also free of bugs.

I'm an iPhone user for 2,5 years now. Never had this issues before and I've always used this two apps.

(I've left Android, just for this kind of bugs... regrettable)

@Mikey Watson: LOL, and if it's indeed an iOS bug, you've got the same issue with your new +1000$ iPhone...

Maybe some "constructive" talking...

As earlier mentioned, iOS 13.5(.1) takes very long time to calibrate. 10 days after the clean install, battery life became normal on my Xs Max. One condition: every time I used them , in my case, Buienradar, iCulture or HLN, I have to force shutdown those apps. If I didn't, my battery drains completely in less than12h.

In the App Store update section, I already saw improvements on battery life for HLN. So far I haven't seen background battery consumption.

Two days ago iCulture has been updated. Indeed, I opened the app an hour ago and no background activity yet.

In the app store, they explained the problem. For who's interested: I add a print screen of the explanation. It's Dutch, sorry, but translations apps will do the magic...

I have the same problem on my IPhone 7, the charging won't go up but dropping if I use while charging, instead the battery percentage dropping when plugged in, put it on a overnight charge, it did not hit 100% charged. Apart from that, it drains in hours without heavy usage. Apple PLEASE DO SOMETHING, 13.5.1 is not working as loads of users preferred. Don't mock us to buy new phone because of this update.

Thank you. Your post and johnmorellos points to certain apps and settings may be incompatible with 13.5

Now think about this.

A developer called Kimi claims apps are running in background when they have no right to be. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251435983?answerId=252860389022#252860389022

The covid API's have been introduced to allow Covid19 track and trace apps, and the biggest demand on these apps is that they must work at all times in the background.

Any connection? Just thinking out loud.

Hostile?? I am trying to piece this evidence together

It doesn't help if people post MeToo messages without reading the thread (the ones replying direct to TexThomas)

If people talk nonsense (Like "this always happens" when it clearly doesn't) then I have to contradict it.

What do you make of my last post?, try to contribute while you are at it.

No, tell you what, none of my devices have this problem so why should I bother. You take over Pearapps.

I can’t promise anything and by do I feel your pain. But I can tell you my experience. My old phone was working significantly better and lasting longer after I did a reset. I boxed it up and sent it to Apple to get my 1k$ deposit back. The new one I’m on now that was set up manually (not restored) has been perfect and has reminded me why I bought an iPhone in the first place. Just don’t transfer data or apps from old. Good luck, bud.

Same story here. I updated two iPhones (6s and 6s Plus) to 13.5.1 a couple weeks ago. But issues started just two days ago, on both devices.

In my case I tracked it down to the native Music app. The issues started when I tried to download a music album on one of the iPhones. The app behaved strangely, showing partial download of some tracks, spinning the download wheel picture but never finishing the download. The phone started to get hot and drain the battery. Closing the app and restarting the phone didn't help, it seemed that it continued the downloading attempts in the background and loaded the system. The other phone started lagging, getting hot and draining battery later the same day, although I didn't touch the Music app on it, - probably because it was on the same iTunes account and decided to download the same album automatically.

What helped in my case:

For the first time, I did full encrypted backup of the phone to a computer, fully erased the phone and then restored from the backup. This helped. However, once I attempted to download a music album in the Music app again, the issue returned.

For the second time, I tried a lighter approach, and it helped:

  1. I closed Music app.
  2. Turned on 'Airplane mode' (my idea was to prevent it from continuing download attempts)
  3. Opened Music app again to check if it stopped loading the album (it did)
  4. Restarted the iPhone - turn it off and on (just to be sure it interrupted background download)
  5. Loaded Music app to check that it didn't attempt to download music anymore
  6. Turned off 'Airplane mode'

I can use the Music app if I do not download tracks, - streaming seems to be fine and does not cause issues.

I tried the procedure listed for doing a reset, set up as new and restore from iTunes on a Mac. The app that shows it is using all the battery is Music background activity... over 10 hours and still climbing after turning off background refresh for it. It must not be a problem with an outdated app if Apple is the developer, correct? I guess we just need to leave our phones plugged in and wait for the next update.

Already poor battery performance from Apple has now become pathetic!! When Safari is open, within no time it goes from 95+% to 30+%!! Also when Whatsapp runs, battery drains out - Couple of %s in a min. BTB, none of these apps were updated between previous ios version and current one. Need to keep on charge round the clock. Basic testing a flaw!

Finally fixed on my iPhone XS: disconnected from iCloud account, and reconnected.

I did power cycle the device in between, but don’t know if it necessary.

Before that, I tried everything without success:

  • uninstall Mail (it was using the most of the background process)
  • turn off background activity
  • reset iPhone, re-initialise with backup

Nothing worked.

Now its fine!

I am referring to completely disconnecting from iCloud, from Settings, right at the top where you see your Apple ID > . In this screen, there is a disconnect button at the bottom (Mine is in French, so words may not be exact here).

This will ask for you apple ID password and ask a few confirmations before disconnecting your device from your iCloud account.

I did a complete power cycle before re-connecting back to iCloud. And my iPhone is cold and perfect since then.
