NewMac running 10.15

Very interesting upgrading a Mac. (1) think the default setting should be firewall on rather than the newbie having to go in and actually turn it on. (2) have been asked to input my login password to sign into apple communities rather that my Apple ID password. (3) have been asked to input my iPhone passcode into my new Mac in order to enable a feature. 2 and 3 are discomforting - thinly key that should ever be required to for anything to do with Apple ID is the Apple ID password.

(1) It's off by default because you rarely need it.

A firewall isn't a security feature. It is a network management tool for isolating certain devices from certain other devices and users.

Your NAT router is the only firewall you need unless you have multiple sharing services enabled and need to connect into a public network. It is easier to turn on the Firewall than to turn off all of the sharing services.

(2) It is getting the AppleID password from the keychain.

(3) That is essentially using 2-factor authentication to enable the iCloud-based features that require 2-factor authentication. You are proving you have a trusted device to make the new Mac a trusted device. https://tidbits.com/2019/09/26/why-apple-asks-for-your-passcode-or-password-with-a-new-login-and-why-its-safe/
