Can't ensure sleep mode is working...

i have a mac pro tower (mojave) and when i sleep the computer remotely. it does disconnected my session and it seems to be sleeping, but for some reason i am still able to ssh and VNC to it. is this correct or.. how can i ensure that it was asleep? the display shuts down, but the fan is still running. and even tho my remote software (splashtop) recognizes the machine as sleeping. and the computer's physical display is off- i can ssh in and wehn i do a top -u from ssh, it appears as if most of the processes are sleeping. but the fan is on and i can access VNC and ssh.

sorry, i'm kind of a mac newb, but is this normal behavior from apple sleep mode?

thank you!

Sleep mode does not shut the computer down. Background processes (updating, syncing, photo analysis, etc) continue and the Mac is in “standby” mode to know if you pressed a key to wake it up.

What exactly gets shut down is controlled thru the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences.

https://www.macworld.com/article/1168151/find-out-whats-keeping-your-mac-awake.html

pmset -g assertions  will bring up a list of pid's that are preventing my mac from sleeping. and then i found it was sharingd which led me to find this article...

mmm.... kind of but maybe i wasn't being as specific. i was wondering why in sleep mode, i was able to still SSH in. i don't think the sshd daemon should be running while sleeping. i understand maintenance sweeps and stuff, but this isn't that. turns out i waited until the next morning and now it truly is sleeping. so i guess it does sleep in sleep mode, now i just gotta figger out when "sleep" goes into "deep sleep" thanks

Wake-on-LAN tells your Mac Hardware to watch for a special wake-up packet, and wake when it is received. Some other device on your Network must be capable of producing and sending that wake-up packet for the feature to work as expected. That other device is called a sleep proxy server.

Apple Airport Routers or an Apple-TV devices can be used easily. Other devices take much more fiddling.

thanks so much grant!

yeah i thinki got all that setup. i got another machine on the subnet (albeit a windows box) that is always on that is sending the magic packet over. this is is the overarching goal, but i was curious as to the different modes of sleep the macOS has before i got to that. since my original post is about the slumbering, i'll keep it to that- but will remember your advice on the WoL as i progress... thanks!
