Macbook Air (wont charge or turn on with battery removed)

So my macbook air (with removable battery) stopped charging. It still shows the (needs charging) symbol when the battery is attached. I read that you can run the computer on main power without the battery but when I remove the battery it still doesn't power on or show the (needs charging) symbol. Is there something else that's wrong with my computer or can I NOT run the computer without the battery? I have a brand new charger btw so the charger should be fine...

Thank you.

Hello Phil,

Your MacBook Air should turn ON without the battery when connected to Power. The "Needs Charging" symbol will not show when there is no battery installed because there is no battery in there to charge. I think there is something entirely wrong but may not be related to the battery itself. The battery circuit and starting circuit may be involved but may not be the battery itself from what I can conclude with the brief description of the issue that you stated in your post above.

Put the battery back in the MacBook Air and lets start with basic troubleshooting first if you have not done so already.

  1. Reset SMC by following the directions applicable to your MacBook Air here ➔ How to Reset SMC. If that does not solve things then-
  2. Reset NVRAM/PRAM by following the directions applicable to your MacBook Air here ➔ How to Reset NVRAM/PRAM.

Let us know how you do after you have performed the above steps successfully. Thanks.
