Screen Capture highlight won't disappear

Others have asked this Q but those answers have not helped me. When I take a screenshot (CMD/Shift/5) the screen is dulled except for a window identifying the shot. Click the spacebar or Enter and the image is stored as a .png. So far, so good. But then the dulling/highlight-window remains. The only way to get rid of them is to restart my MacBook Pro (Mojave 10.14.6).

I've checked the Screen Capture options and I've tried a restart in Safe mode.

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, wisdom fan!

I understand the screenshot screen does not go away after taking a screen shot. I'd be happy to provide information to help you address this.

The Command + Shift + 5 screenshot option is meant to help you adjust where screenshots are saved among other options. If you want to make sure the screenshots option goes way, try these other methods: Take a screenshot on your Mac

Have a great day!

I think you described it adequately as I have the same issue and it just started yesterday. Rebooting got rid of it the first time, but now I'm afraid to use it as it seems to be a continuing issue. After rebooting, the next screen grab I tried, the exact same issue occurred. The white, highlighted area persists in the location where the screen grab was taken, after I've done whatever with the image. The highlighted aspect isn't clickable or moveable. It is incredibly frustrating because it renders the rest of the screens dark. Please help.
