Screen Capture Window Persists

Whenever I use Command-Shift-5 to capture a portion of my screen the screen doesn't return to normal after tapping Enter key. The grayed out area remains gray and the capture area remains highlighted.

This happens even when I start my MacBook Pro (16" 2019 Intel) running OS 13.0.1 in safe mode.

There are other, older discussions of this issue on this forum, but no solutions identified.

Hoping someone has figured out the problem.

Do you have capture a selected portion or record a selected portion selected? Sounds like the latter. If you have record selected it will remain gray until you click the stop button in the Menu Bar.
