What's the difference between them, and how do I download them?

Both are free + current. Open Office came first, then Libre Office which is based on Open Office, is more maintained with newer features. I use Open Office on my early 2008 iMac running El Capitan, works great. Just check out the professional reviews of both. Just download them from their websites, check on Google.
LibreOffice is the better maintained, more feature capable, and more supported document conversion of the two. It should be your default choice on macOS, as it is mine. Better documentation too.
Thanks, both of you for your help. Turns out Open and Libre Office are way over my head. I was thinking it was a software that would allow me to write on blank pages; things like fiction, poetry, ideas et al. Apple used to support Microsoft's, Wordplay, I think it was, and Excel, but no longer. If you have any ideas along that line, I'd be grateful. Open Office, by the way, is up for sale!
