Having to reactivate an old model of the Ipod touch

I have an iPod touch from 7 yrs ago in good condition. I haven't used it in a year. I charged it up and turned it on and it states that I need to slide it in order to set it up again. After sliding the screen, it prompted me to input my pass code which I did. Then the screen went on to display WiFi options to connect to. Once I connected, my iPod stated that that,' Your iPod touch could not be activated because the activation server cannot be reached. Try connecting your iPod touch to iTunes to activate it, or try again in a couple of minutes. If the problem persists, contact Apple Support at apple.com/support." Please note, that I already attempted to utilize iTunes which didn't work for me either. I'm not really an apple user. This iPod was gift for music. Can anyone help me out? I'd really appreciate any help that I can get to get my iPod re-setup. Thank you ALL in advance!
